Brain MRI: 5 Things Your Neurologist Wants You to Know
Brain MRI scans create highly detailed images of your brain using a powerful magnet and radio waves. This advanced imaging tool helps us identify many neurological conditions while guiding us toward the most appropriate treatment plan.
The procedure involves lying on a sliding table that places you inside a large circular machine. A typical brain MRI usually takes between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the type of images we need.
A brain MRI can sound intimidating if you've never had one before. Many people worry about what the scan involves, why they need it, or what the results might reveal. At Memphis Neurology, we understand those concerns, and we're here to ensure you feel informed about your procedure.
During the scan, you'll hear loud tapping, knocking, or buzzing sounds as the machine operates. We'll usually provide earplugs or headphones to help you feel more comfortable, and you won't feel the magnetic field or radio waves during the procedure. You can communicate throughout the exam, so you'll know what's happening from start to finish.
Here are five important things we'd like every patient to know before having a brain MRI.
1. A brain MRI gives us incredibly detailed images
MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, an MRI doesn't use radiation. Those images allow us to examine structures that other imaging tests may not show as clearly. Depending on your symptoms, we may recommend a brain MRI to investigate:
- Frequent or severe headaches
- Migraines that have changed in pattern
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Seizures
- Signs of stroke
- Memory loss or confusion
- Weakness or numbness
- Vision changes
- Multiple sclerosis symptoms
- Brain tumors
Although an MRI provides valuable information, it represents just one part of your evaluation. We also consider your symptoms and medical history, complete a physical examination, and perform any additional testing required before making a diagnosis.
2. You need to keep still during the MRI
The biggest challenge for many patients involves lying still while the scanner takes images. Even small movements can blur the pictures, so staying as still as possible helps us obtain the clearest results.
3. Implants can affect the MRI machine
Before your MRI, we'll ask several questions about your medical history. Be sure to tell us if you have:
- A pacemaker or other implanted heart device
- Brain aneurysm clips
- Metal fragments in your body
- Implanted medication pumps
- A cochlear implant
- Artificial joints or surgical hardware
- Any history of metalworking injuries involving your eyes
It's important to answer them honestly because certain implanted medical devices or metal objects may affect your ability to have an MRI safely.
4. Sometimes we use contrast to gather more information
Not every brain MRI requires contrast dye, but some do. If we recommend contrast, we'll explain why it's helpful for your specific situation.
Contrast helps certain areas of the brain stand out more clearly, allowing us to evaluate blood vessels, inflammation, tumors, infections, or other conditions with greater accuracy. Most people tolerate MRI contrast very well.
The contrast material usually enters through a small IV in your arm. Before your appointment, we'll review your medical history, kidney function when necessary, and any previous reactions to contrast so we can perform the study as safely as possible.
5. We can help if you feel claustrophobic
You should let us know if you have claustrophobia or even if you just feel anxious in enclosed spaces. Many people experience some degree of claustrophobia during an MRI, and that's completely understandable.
In many cases, we can discuss strategies to help you stay comfortable, including relaxation techniques and, when appropriate, medication.
MRI results
Many patients expect their MRI to provide all the answers immediately. While brain MRIs offer remarkable detail, we always interpret the images alongside your symptoms and the results of a neurological examination.
In some cases, the MRI appears completely normal even though you're experiencing very real symptoms. In others, the scan may reveal findings that require additional testing before we reach a final diagnosis.
